Massage Client Relationship Part 3 of 3

Let’s rewind a bit.  Remember Mr. Executive who was sitting outside calling me repeatedly?  That was when?  Back in April, May?  Can’t remember.  Well, he is off his ban now. He caught up with me this week and I agreed to do a massage for him.  He was punctual.

Very punctual.  Half hour early. Strange how people change.  He wasted no time filling me in on what happened in his world in the name of massage.  He was over in Miami where he got the foot massage.  Foot massage?

Yes, the one where they walk on you.  Oh!  He explained that a very hot towel was placed on his back for a few minutes, then the walking began.  It felt like: Wow!  Okay. Then he is working out at a gym where he is supervising himself.  He added extra weights to his routine and he body did not like that, so he tried to get a massage.

He said that he called me several times got voice message.  He said he found a Therapist.  This field is very small, so a client says something and the mind zooms in on the tiny Massage Map of Trinidad, so I had an idea of where he went.  The massage was good.  It could have been rated very good, but he complained that the Therapist did not understand him, so her strokes became intense too soon and his body did not like that.

Hmmm.  Listen, you can’t please every client.  And I am only too aware that he might have said the opposite thing to the Therapist, so we have to be selective about what we believe.
He also spoke of a prominent tennis player who said he went into early retirement because the painful massages after the games were too much for him.  He wanted to know why sports massage was painful.

I said to him what I would have said in class.  It is for each Therapist to justify their actions. We have gone back and forth over the issue of micro-trauma from repetitive muscle use.  These tissues need delicate treatment after a game, especially an intense one.

There are basic guidelines for post-event massage, but sometimes there is nothing quite as exhilarating as hearing an athlete scream. You’re serious?  Who is this guy?  No, I’m not serious.  And he recounted when his arm was injured and the Doctor sent him to a Physiotherapist and the guy poked his arm with different tools and he had screaming moments.

I told him that’s the point where the Therapist becomes a Musician and is testing the scales.  However, more needs to be done to make the client aware that the higher their range, the greater the success of the treatment, so they should not emit modest groans, but go for the full scream.

You’re not serious, right? Okay, so he has been away for a few months and he is out of synch with me.  No, I am not serious.  But you can consider the principle of fighting fire with fire.  Similarly, inducing greater pain than what is being experienced can nullify the pain entirely, but not necessarily immediately.

Probably in a few hours, or the next day.  Really?  Really.  How come you don’t do that?  Oh, it’s my ears.  They can handle loud music, but not whining humans.
When he turned over for me to do the front of his body he decided that that was his opportunity to understand what took place on the day that he was waiting outside.  Was I to tell him that that was the last straw?

That he was on suspension?  I told him I prefer not to talk about it as the details are vague at this time.  He said he was concerned for my safety and wondered what could have happened so suddenly.  He even considered that I was being robed? Robed?  Of what?  I asked if he’s ever heard of a ‘man of straw.’  Yes.  That’s me.  He laughed.  Well, at least he got a joke.

Then he asked me what is embolism.  Is he serious?  A Massage Therapist is supposed to know that?  I thought we were supposed to be pretty and docile and seeking every opportunity to wiggle our frames to get an extra dollar.  He asked if it was clot blood.  I told him when we think of a clot we can think of cells responsible for clotting.

They are called thrombocytes, taking us to thrombosis.  Embolism could be a clot or some other fragment like bone from an arthritic joint, bouncing along the freeway of our blood vessel.  Real-ly?  Maybe not, but that’s my impression of it. Ooooh.  I told him that there is the argument that thrombosis is static while an embolism moves.

As Therapists we are supposed to be wary of this so that we don’t activate movement.  If we work with the movement theory, then thrombosis in terms of a clot is only thrombosis during its formation.  At some point it moves, even if it’s just a millimeter, but the Doctor would not trouble the patient with that information.  If it moves much more than that then it becomes an embolism, and at whichever point it gets stuck, because it is static, it should be called thrombosis again.  He said a friend of his recently died suddenly and he learnt it was embolism.

I told him the theory of embolism being associated with movement makes it impossible for his friend to die of that.  He had to have died from thrombosis.  It stuck somewhere and prevented oxygen and nutrients from entering that area.  Anyway, we are all entitled to our opinions.  He should have asked a Doctor or check the Internet, instead he saved the question for me.  Sweet.
I had to reacquaint myself with his body, so the massage went over the time by about 15 minutes.  When it was all over I left him to rest a bit.  Duties call, so the rest was short-lived.  He sat up on the table and was about to say something when I heard a splitting sound and his body did a dip.  Okay, so there’s visual-effects in my living room now?

Perfect.  He is over 250lbs and was sitting at that half-way point where the hinges meet.  He got off the table.  I turned it over to see what went wrong.  The hinges were perfectly in place. Nothing was bent.  I set it up back and tried to understand what happened.  Made no sense.

He got into his clothes then came to check.  This meant reenacting.  Fine.  No snap this time, but his body dipped.  We looked again.  The board itself had broken, but not dislodged, so it looked perfect until you applied pressure.  Now would you believe that this man paid his flat fee and walked out that door?  No contribution towards repairs, or promise of such.

Some people are not worth the trouble they give.  Now I have to arrange transportation to cart the table off to some repair place. Thank God I have one to replace that in the interim.  There is negative energy that makes you uncomfortable, then there is negative energy that breaks things.  I have never heard of a broken table from any Therapist (not saying it never happened), and I have decided that our client/therapist arranged has (obviously) ceased to be beneficial.
Well, one of my friends from back home will be going to Panama for a 3-week vacation so she will be here in transit for 10 hours on tomorrow.  I told her I will send a taxi for her and she can spend the time with me.  She wanted to know what she can expect when she comes.  She asked if I have the snake in my living room yet.  Did I tell her about that?  She must be my friend.  She is the kind of friend who I talk to a few times a year yet it is as if we have been talking all the time.

The gaps disappear when we reconnect.  Oh, yes.  I remember.  Years ago when I was in Belmont she had introduced me to a friend of hers from Arima who has extensive knowledge of snakes, and he and I had sat down and discussed the pros and cons of a snake in captivity.  He was willing to help me set up the whole thing, but I changed my mind.  So no, the snake is not here.

I told her the only excitement would be a massage - she could be a model for the students to work on.  She laughed.  Said she has gained too much weight to expose herself to my students, besides, she might break my table.  Ha!  I told her someone has already beaten her to that.  What?!  I was just joking.  I know, but it seriously happened by a guy who is constantly asking if I am serious.

She wanted to hear the story and I related it to her. When I was finished she said: You know what that is about, right?  I asked what.  Karma, she said.  Really?  Yes!  You taught me that.  (I hope I haven’t taught anyone else that.

It’s an insensitive concept).  So I taught you that, huh?  Yes! Okay.  Accepted.  I wonder what lesson she’d learn if I leave her sitting in the cold airport on tomorrow.  Oops!  Can’t do that.  Mom is sending some of my jewelry with her.

Don’t Be a Dope and Have to Learn When It Hurts

Every Body Expects To Be Massaged

I want to share something I have learn as a massage therapist that literally always makes me say' hmmm...
Ok, I know you don’t know me but I know massage, I know, I have seen the benefits people get from a whole body massage.

To be honest, before I was exposed to therapeutic massage I thought that it was only erotic or sensual massages. Trained and certified, 7 years later and I have ample unsolicited testimonials from clients. They describe it as feeling euphoric, pain relief, relaxed muscles, elation and light. I have regular weekly and monthly clients.  I love massaging.

I also advise my clients on some self massage techniques they can use to remove the beads (knots) from their muscles in their feet, hands, neck or shoulder.  I have a Facebook page dedicated to giving tips that my clients and fans can use.   Here’s what I find funny.

Maybe you know, or don’t know but one natural human instinct is to massage the part of the body that feels any type of discomfort.  Nobody bumps their head and rubs their knees.

That’s living proof that most people are reactive.  In the same way, instead of learning how to perform self massage they prefer to wait until they must, until they are hurt.   Believe me, one way or other; the pain will be massaged.  Doesn’t it make sense to learn before?

In other words,” I don’t want to learn how to tie my shoe; I’ll learn after I fall”.  You get the point.  Nobody knows the degree of pain you feel when you are hurt.  It is truly your pain.  Even attempts to describe it to others make it hurt more.

I’m telling you from my heart take the time and learn how you can relieve your own pain.

I don’t have a web site yet so I use Facebook is busy; so much to do.  I invited all my friends to join the page and a few did but many just ignored the request.  I could appreciate it because a few of them are the ones who constantly send request to be their neighbor on Farmville; which I usually ignore.  Those games consume too much time.

Ok, before you think about it, go here and like my Facebook page.

Sex and Trinidad & Tobago Massage Therapists - Part 2

Massages with Happy Endings

Why are Trinidad and Tobago men so obsessed with sexual satisfaction when they hear the word “massage”?

This is a question we focused on in the last post on this topic.  One Massage Therapist attributed the pervasive misconception to the history of massage in Trinidad and Tobago.  Citizens of this country were introduced to massage not as a healing art but as a precursor to sex.

In the early years the only commercially available massages were done in what was known as Massage Parlors.  Men were offered erotic or sensual massages usually performed by scantily dressed, very attractive young women.

It was a legitimate way for both encumbered and single men to “get off” without the guilty feeling of having paid a prostitute or “make a fare” as it is said in Trinidad.

Massage therapy is relatively new in Trinidad and Tobago when compared to older cultures.  It was the emergence of a culture of sports that legitimate Massage Therapy really began getting a toe hold in Trinbago.  Most dedicated athletes appreciate the therapeutic value of a well done massage.

How To Minimize The Risk of STDs & HIV Aids Infections in Trinidad and Tobago

Mainly because of sports, more local men became certified Massage Therapists with the ability to execute a professional Swedish, Deep Tissue or Acupressure massage.  This was the catalyst that transformed the perception of the industry for a significant of men in Trinidad and Tobago.

Ironically, now men are fending off women with the same misconceptions of their mail counterparts.

Most legitimately certified massage therapists must constantly be on the alert to weed out clients seeking massages with “happy endings”.

In the real live example in my last post, I promised to share how what was a legitimate appointment turned out.  I called to confirm and the conversation was short and disappointing.  Here’s how it went...

“Hello I’m calling to confirm your appointment for a full body massage at 8:30 AM”

“Yes, I’m getting ready to come out there right now” he said, then continued.
“I have one question to ask; do I get a release at the end of the massage?”

“Do you mean you will like to be jerked off after the massage?” knowing the answer before I asked.

“Yes” he answered.

“No” I responded, “you are looking for a different type of massage, we don’t do those.”

“Ok” he said.  “I’ll call you back”

“Have a nice day” I said, as I hung up the phone.

Dammit admit it.   Trinidad and Tobago men and women do have misconstrued idea of Massage Therapy.  We know that now.  The more important question is not why but how.
-->

How can legitimate massage therapists turn this thing around?

Education is the obvious answer.

But how do we re-educate a cultural belief?  How do we change men’s minds?

Most Massage Therapists Have The Shoe Maker’s Problem

Caught In The Trader’s Trap

He builds and repairs shoes for hundreds of customers while ignoring holes in the soles of his own shoes.   Massage Therapist almost never get a massage themselves.  They don't realize that unlike the shoemaker their entire business depends on their health.

Whether a Massage Therapist works for an organization or is independent, finding the time to have a massage on their own body is almost impossible.  No doubt, it is easy, and most do, self massage when they feel a pain but for many of the pains they cannot effectively massage.

The truth is that Massage Therapists are similar to doctors, lawyers, plumbers and shoemakers.  In fact, any profession that relies on an individual’s skill for sustained income falls under that is called the “Trader’s Trap”. The pitfall is that their economic survival depends on their good health.  If, or should I say when,  their health is affected in any way, they immediately lose their income.

The irony is that most Massage Therapists know the benefits of a therapeutic massage; yet they come up with reasons like “I’m too busy”  “I can’t find anyone to massage me”  or  the classic “I don’t need one”.   It's the same excuses that many of their clients use when they try to avoid having a massage done.

And take a guess which part of the body feels the pain first.  Yes, you are right, the feet.  Most Message Therapists are on their feet most of the day which will eventually take a toll after a few years.

What's your excuse?  When's the last time you had a massage done on your feet or whole body?

Take your own medicine and get a massage soon, no one knows the benefits better than yourself.

Massage Therapists In Trinbago Should Celebrate Ash Wednesday

A Cultural Phenomena - A Captive Market

Ash Wednesday should be the beginning of the year for Massage Therapists in Trinidad and Tobago.

There is no other time of the year when so many Trinbagonian are hurting from using muscles that were only used last year.

Walking, chipping, jumping  and palancing penerates muscles and sinews and cartilages; they pain.

The muscles in my lower foot from the tip of my toes to my calves are mushy and painful.  Having quite a few contacts in the industry I felt that at least one would contact me and offer their services.

What really hurts was when I had to call the person I had my last massage with, (I hate calling her my MT anymore) she did not call me. But I still made the appointment for this afternoon. Does that say anything to you?

It was only after I made the appointment that I thought about what actually happened.  This is not how it was supposed to work.

I had recommended to one MT last week that she take advantage of the captured market of weary masqueraders but I think she was more focused on masquerade.

I suggested that she give a couple of the band owners she knew a small flyer offering each a free massage.  My idea was to offer a foot massage for about 10 minutes each.

The person would have to make an appointment for the free massage and be qualified to receive it.  .

The intention is to separate the people who are open to a massage from those who are not and to use the ten minutes to up sell them on a full body massage.

There is nothing like having a captive audience where you can begin the consultative selling process.
Everyone in the country who played Mas this year have aching feet today unless they played the Mas on a float.

If you are a therapist without clients today you should certainly reconsider your marketing.

If you are a client with aching feet, contact me and I will recommend a good Massage Therapist in your area.

Why Every Massage Therapist In Trinidad and Tobago Should Use Facebook

The #1 Reason Why Every Massage Therapist in Trinidad and Tobago Should Use FaceBook

Facebook has become synonymous with the Internet in Trinidad and Tobago.

In fact, when you put meaning to the statistic generated within Facebook the numbers tell an interesting story.

Here are some findings with interpretations.

As of March 2nd 2011 there are:

Exactly 403,860 people 13 to 64+years old registered on Facebook who actually live in Trinidad and Tobago. With a census population of jus
t over 1.228,691 according to World Stats, it means that approximately a third of the population in T&T are registered on Facebook.

The total internet usage in Trinidad and Tobago is reported to be 485,000 representing 39.5 % of the total population now get online.

Eighty three percent of the people on the Internet in Trinidad and Tobago are registered on Facebook.

Compare the 33% of the total penetration on the Internet in T&T to the 77% penetration in the United States.

Would you imagine that there would be a greater percentage of people in the US registered on Facebook?

Not so, the US penetration is only 43% compared to T&T 83% Facebook penetration.

Facebook has penetrated the psyche of Trinbago culture almost as much as the Internet.

Here are some other interesting Facebook statistics on Trinidad and Tobago. Facebook calls this the "estimated reach", i.e. the number of people in a particular age group in Trinidad and Tobago that Facebook reaches:
  • There are 218,040 people on FB who live in Trinidad and Tobago between the ages of 18 and 25 inclusive
  • There are 275,740 people on FB who live in Trinidad and Tobago between the ages of 25 and 50 inclusive
  • There are 36,000 people on FB who live in Trinidad and Tobago between the ages of 50 and 64 inclusive.

These are interesting statistics because now it can be concluded that Facebook has a reach, in the 18 year olds and above, of 529,780 Trinbagoians.

That is more than the Express (45K), Guardian (40K) and Newsday (40K) a total circulation of 125,000 daily. Facebook reaches five times as many Trinbagoians. .

What does all this mean to massage therapist in Trinidad and Tobago? It means that all these entities cannot ignore this social network. It means that they must find a way to leverage it to accomplish their missions. Facebook is not fading away.

Some of the early adopters will be the first to maximize the Facebook potential but many will continue to see it as just another social network. It is a social medium but it’s also a communication medium with the pre-requisite infrastructure to support any type of communication.

Users have the ability to use email, instant chatting and sharing information all within the network. It’s the ideal medium to maintain constant contact with any group, company, organization or a significant segment of the Trinidad and Tobago population.

Ignore it at your own peril.

What's The Primary Reason A Massage Prospect Would Choose You or Your Business?

How To Get More New Clients

Today let's talk about marketing your Massage Therapy practice.

Here is the assumption; you are a small practice, a place to call your own and you need clients.

You have already tried, or hopefully not tried printing flyers, giving everyone you meet your business card and calling all the family and friends you know.

If you were enterprising you may have place an ad in the newspaper but that is not sustainable. So now what?  What can you do to get more clients.

The first question you should ask yourself is; Why should someone do business with me?  Why should they not go to someone else who does massages? What makes me special, different, unique?

In a lot of the cases, especially in your local market the perpetual question in your prospects mind is; Why should I massage anyway?  What do I get out of it?

Now if your prospective client knew the benefits of a professional massage they would be begging you for an appointment.  But that's not the case, they know nothing about you, they do not understand what a deep tissue massage does.  For example, if they are over 50 and have never been massaged what would you want to tell them? If they were in constant pain; what would you tell them?

These are questions your should ask and be able to respond to for before you  introduce yourself.  Know the  benefits of not only the massage but why you?  If you are a therapist and you are reading this answer the questions.  If you wish, and you are bold enough, share your answers.  Maybe we can sharpen up a bit.

Imagine I'm a potential client you just met and you want to convince them that they should do a massage with you.  Why?  Tell me.  What makes you different?  Why will they want to come back?  Let's hear you.

Therapeutic Value of Massage

An Excerpt from The eBook "Nature's Cures"

Massage is an excellent form of passive exercise.
The word is derived from the Greek word
‘massier’ which means to knead. It involves the
scientific manipulation of the soft tissues of the body.

If correctly done on a bare body, it can be highly stimulating and invigorating.
As far back as 400 B.C. , the great Hippocrates, the father of medicine,
employed massage and manipulation in healing his patients. Since then it has
been used as a mode of treatment for many ailments and it has restored
many a sufferer to health and vigor.

Benefits
The general massage, dealing with all parts of the body, is highly beneficial
in many ways. It tones up the nervous system, influences respiration and
quickens the elimination of poisons and waste material from the body through
the various eliminative organs such as the lungs, skin, kidneys and bowels.
It also boosts blood circulation and metabolic processes. A massage
removes facial wrinkles , helps to fill out hollow cheeks and neck and eases
stiffness, sore muscles and numbness.

Various movements
There are five fundamental modes of manipulation in massage and these are :
  • effleurage (stroking),
  • friction ( rubbing),
  • petrissage ( kneading),
  • tapotment (percussion) and
  • vibration (shaking or trembling)

Constipated? Have You Tried A Massage?

An Old Prescription For An Old Ailment

According to an article written in www.nursingtimes.net  and reprinted in MassageMag.com a study was conducted to determine the affects of massages on constipation.

It compared the results of laxative to abdominal massages.  The conclusion of the group that  had these massages was:

"The study participants considered abdominal massage to be a pleasant treatment compared with using laxatives, which often have negative side-effects,"  Read More

How Does A Massage Affect Your Mind?

Qualified Proof That Massages Are Mind Altering

The story about my friend will continue but before we do, read this Massage News.

A recent study done by the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in LA, Calif concluded that massages can actually make a sick person better and improve a well person emotional disposition..

That's not breaking news to people in the industry but it does provide scientific proof that a massage does not only stimulate the muscles.

What they discovered is that massages can actually reduce aggressive behavior.

They tested the blood of subjects in the study before and after the massages.  Guess what they found?

Are There Any Good Massage Therapists in Trinidad and Tobago?

My friend Jenny got into an accident the other day.  Well, it was not really an accident but I’ll say it was an accident so that I don't call her stupid.

When she told me the story it made me laugh.  I know he's going to read this so I will not share the details with you.

She had hurt her back and I could see that she was in a lot of pain so the laugh did not last long.

She explained that she visited the doctor who told her that she would have to let her back heal on its own while prescribing some pain pills.

She was aware of the regenerative affects of massage therapy and since she had only recently returned from living many years in India, she wanted to know how to find a good therapist in Trinidad, preferably in Port of Spain.
She had a plan too, she would take a couple pain pills before then have the massage done.  By the time the affects of the pain pills wore off she would be fine.  Sound like a good idea but she needed to find one soon.

Fortunately for her, I was thinking, I had the perfect Spa.  A massage therapist. I have known for quite awhile, I mentioned the name to her.  She ran a Day Spa in Port of Spain.

She stopped me suddenly when I mentioned the name, a mean look crossed her face.  I thought that she had a sharp pain in her back.  I was wrong..

She quickly explained that she happened to call that same Spa and the receptionist was so rude to her she  hung up.  She swore that if that was the only place she could go, she will continue the pain pill regimen.

I bet my friend would like to hear that bit of news.

So how could she find a good therapist anywhere in Trinidad and Tobago?

I decided to help her.

The story of how we found one is interesting.  I will share that with you in my next
